FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it possible to accompany you on your boat to the service?

Due to the challenges of scheduling services around safe weather windows, the intercoastal tides and charter docking, we do not currently allow guests to accompany the crew of Second Wind for the service. However, you and your family can participate via video.

Order your (no cost) “Cremated Remains Kit 2” from USPS.com or from your local U.S. Post Office. The kit should contain: 1 box, Priority Mail Express Tape, Bubble Cushioning, Self-sealing Plastic Bag, Publication 139. At the time of shipping the USPS would also attach an orange label on the box.

Do you offer Memorial At Sea services for veterans?

Yes, we would be honored to scatter the ashes of your honored veteran. We do offer a special discount for veterans. Please note the U. S. Navy does perform sea burials for veterans and their families free of charge, with certain restrictions.  You can learn more about veteran sea burial services here.

Does Memorials at Sea perform any other types of charters?

Please know that we only offer memorial at sea services. We don’t offer sailing cruises or fishing charters. We are focused on providing the very best memorial at sea possible and are committed to ensuring we take care of your loved one’s remains as we would our own.

How soon will our service be performed?

We typically spread ashes within 10 days of their arrival at Memorial at Sea.  We choose a day to scatter the ashes with calm seas and sunny skies. Where a specific date or time period is important to you, we will do our very best to fulfill your wishes.

Why do families choose to spread ashes at sea?

Many individuals – such as retired servicemen, avid boaters or sailors – have a kinship with the sea and wish to make the ocean their final resting place. Others would simply like to return to the Earth from which we all came rather than a concrete burial plot.

The eternal cycles of the ocean's water, the conservation of the land space as well as the shortage of cemetery plots are all reasons cited for selecting sea scattering. This alternative to traditional burial is most affordable.

How do I choose a reputable burial at sea company?

Virtually anyone with a boat can perform a burial at sea. Because of this, please make sure you do your research and find someone you can trust. Make sure they are competent, reputable and experienced. Here are a few suggestions on questions to ask:

  • How do I know the services were performed according to my wishes, and spread where you said they would be spread?

  • Do you offer a video recording – or other proof – of the service?

  • Who will be my contact person at your business? Will I be able to speak and coordinate with the actual person conducting the service?

  • Does your company just do burials at sea, or a variety of charter services?

  • Will the burial be performed within 30 days or will the company hold the remains for up to a year when they have many burials to perform?

  • Are all your questions answered to your satisfaction?

Can Memorial at Sea plan a service with our funeral director?

Yes – we would be happy to work with your funeral director to plan your perfect service! Since we’re a small, family-run business, we’ll be both the ones communicating with the funeral director, as well as the ones performing the ceremony. You won’t have to worry about little details of your service getting mis-communicated.
